about

This song flowed out of me.

I was in the studio, waiting to sing something for a project my dad’s working on. He was still setting up for the session, and I had a couple minutes to myself - so, I decided to fiddle around on the piano as I waited. And in a few minutes, I had the chords and verse melody for this song. Words were starting to come too. I didn’t have my phone on me to record the idea on my voice memos (like I usually do), so I asked my dad if we could just quickly record the beginning of the song idea. He said yes. A minute before he hit record, I quickly came up with the chorus - which was wordless and chant-like.

My dad said we should listen back to it. I thought “nah, it’s not a real recording, I just wanted to capture the idea, I’ll sing on your song now”. But he said “You should come listen, it’s really beautiful". I listened. The recording had this real dreamy sound to it. Because we were just recording a rough idea - the microphones had not been placed properly. The vocal mic was way off to the side and kind of behind me, and the piano mic was not set up for piano - but the result was this really interesting ethereal sound. I knew when we switched to dad’s song, we would have to move the mics and we would lose the weird dreamy sound. So I said “What if I finished writing the song right now and we recorded it with this set up?”. Dad laughed, saying jokingly “I thought you were here to sing on my song”.

But I said "I can finish the song in 2 minutes, trust me” (I like a creative challenge). It might not have been actually 2 minutes - but In the next 5-ish minutes I finished the song. And we recorded it after that. There were a few flubs to begin with - since I had just written the piano part, and didn’t know it well - I messed up the piano part a couple of takes. But after a few false starts, we recorded this first full take of me singing and playing at the same time. And this it it!

It’s got a bit of that stream-of-consciousness magic dust feeling to it.

lyrics

All of my days I’ll spend in the garden of life
All of my days I’ll tend to the garden of life
All of my days I’ll spend planting fruit
All of my days till the flowers bloom

Who knows how long I’ll be here
Who knows how long
Who knows how long until my song is sung

Whether there’s sunshine or whether there’s rain
Both of them grow beautiful things

Hmmmmm ah, oh, oooh,
Oooooh, ah, oh, oooh,

If I can find a way to savor it all
Marry the bad with the good and savor it all
If I could capture moments in a bottle
Maybe then I’d savor it all

Who knows how long I’ll be here
Who knows how long
Who knows how long until my song is sung

Whether there’s sunshine or whether there’s rain
Both of them grow beautiful things

Hmmmmm ah, oh, oooh,
Ooooh, ah,oh, oooh,

Ah, ho, hooo
Hooo, ah,
Ho, hooo
